Protection Ratings of Industrial Waterproof Plugs
The most commonly used standard for industrial waterproof plugs is the IP protection rating. Simply put, the first digit indicates dust protection, while the second indicates water protection.
Overview of Common Protection Ratings
1. Dust Protection Rating (First Digit)
IP2X: Protection against finger contact; protects against solid objects > 12 mm.
IP4X: Protection against solid objects > 1 mm (Standard Industrial Grade).
IP5X: Dust-protected; ingress of limited dust does not interfere with operation.
IP6X: Completely dust-tight (Highest dust protection rating).
2. Water Protection Rating (Second Digit)
IPX4: Splash-proof; splashing water from any direction causes no harm.
IPX5: Protection against low-pressure water jets.
IPX6: Protection against powerful water jets (e.g., heavy rain, sea waves).
IPX7: Protection against short-term immersion (1 meter depth for 30 minutes).
IPX8: Protection against continuous immersion (Prolonged submersion, according to manufacturer specifications).
The Most Common Industrial Combinations
IP44: General indoor industrial use; splash-proof for workshops.
IP54: Protection against light dust and splashes.
IP65: Dust-tight and protected against water jets (commonly used outdoors).
IP67: The most mainstream standard—completely dust-tight and capable of withstanding brief immersion in water (suitable for construction sites, outdoor environments, and docks).
IP68: Specialized for deep-water applications, underwater equipment, and extremely harsh environments.
In Summary:
For general indoor projects, IP44 is sufficient;
For outdoor projects or extremely harsh environments, choose IP67.
